Quit Warming That Chair
I’m making some assumptions about you; I hope you don’t mind.
While I’d love to poll each and every reader specifically on these questions I think the assumptions I made are a safe bet and don’t require a lot of statistically-sound polling to validate.
Like, for instance, I’m assuming if you’re here at Camp YOU! you’re after some personal development. You’re the kind of person who wants to grow yourself at least a little beyond where you are today.
I’m assuming if you find the content useful in whatever personal quest you’re on you’ll come back and visit, and if you don’t you won’t.
And I’m assuming you’re actually interested in doing something, not just reading about it or talking about it.

Interpersonal Success
Sometimes you need a swift kick in the pants.
If you’re like the majority of people in this world today your ability to stay on track all of the time is close to nil. You need some external stimuli to keep you moving in the right direction because your natural tendency would be to veer off into the next zip code when you hit a certain point. I’m not suggesting you have ADD – OOH, SHINY SQUIRRELS! – but normal human nature is like electricity – we want to find the path of least resistance, and (too) often that means finding something different to do when we hit something that’s not attractive to us (it’s too rote, too hard, not sexy enough, etc.).

You’re Doing It Wrong

I don’t even know what you’re doing, but I bet you’re doing it wrong.
OK, I jest. I have no idea if you’re doing it wrong, and I’m not prone to just tossing my money away on frivolous bets (I’m a fan of #winning…like Charlie Sheen but without added alcohol and drugs to get me there). But one thing I learned from my own experiences is that even when I was doing it right I was still doing it wrong. And no, I’m not talking about the kind of “doing it wrong” that happens when you’re in a heated discussion with your significant other (you know, the kind where even when you’re right they forgive you).
I’m talking about doing something right for the wrong reason.

The Power of Chuck
OK, anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge “Chuck” fan. While that could also apply to Chuck Norris (come on – who doesn’t appreciate a good Chuck Norris line?), in this particular instance it applies to the NBC TV show. It used to be on Monday nights but moved to Friday nights for its fifth and final season (starting October 2011).
If you’re not familiar with the premise (and bear with me – this is completely pertinent to this week’s post and not just a shameless plug for an awesome show), here’s a quick recap:

Trying Something New
We’re going to tweak things a bit around Camp YOU! We’ve done the weekly “here’s something useful”. There wasn’t a whole lot of structure to it, and in retrospect I realized while there was often a lot of useful stuff in the posts there was often one key thing lacking:
The call to action.
That was actually not that big of a deal when Camp YOU! started because I was writing to myself, mostly – putting all the good stuff I know and have used for success down on paper so I kept it closer to top of mind than I had in the past.
But now that readership is growing I want to make it the most useful site that I can, and that means making sure that things are clearly actionable so you can literally take them and run the very next moment (or day or week or whatever is appropriate).

75 and Sunny
This week was absolutely gorgeous in Kansas City (where I make my home). We had temperatures in the evening that dipped down into the 70s; we were even in the upper-60s after a nice refreshing thunderstorm later in the week. This week of beauty was welcomed with open arms after the heat wave we dealt with the majority of July and into early August (which, while hot for Kansas City standards was nothing like it was in Dallas – my heart goes out to you if you’re down there).
You can imagine, then, that as the temperatures dipped down below the levels that caused spontaneous combustion when you stepped outside more and more people took advantage of the cool spell and spent time outside. Whether they were mowing their lawn, playing catch with their kids or doing something else you saw a lot more denizens spending time in the great outdoors than you had the month prior. People were taking the day by the metaphorical horns and making of it what they wanted.

I‘m kind of in a melancholy kind of mind right now after learning that a plane crashed at the Downtown Kansas City Air Expo today, killing the pilot. Although it was the first fatality for the Air Expo that doesn’t make it any easier to have happen. Whether you knew those involved or not the pain of having someone in the prime of their life taken from us in such a violent fashion is never something you get accustomed to, I expect – or at least I hope I never get accustomed to it.
